In context, the servant in Isaiah 42:1-9 is the Jewish people personified, created and appointed to be a covenant people and a light to the nations. In context, this group was about to emerge from the Babylonian Exile, which the Deuteronomistic theology of the Bible explained as divine punishment for persistent, collective violation of the moral mandates in the Law of Moses. To identify this servant with sinless Jesus requires theological gymnastics.
Yet here we are.
Hebrews 9:11-15 presents Jesus as the mediator of a new covenant via his sacrificial death (and his resurrection). Do not forget the resurrection, O reader. Without it, we have dead Jesus, who can do nothing to redeem anyone.
But I am getting ahead of the story.
Each of the canonical Gospels contains a version of the story of a woman anointing Jesus. Scholars tell us that there were two anointings–one of Christ’s head and another one of his feet–and that the Johannine account merges elements of both. So be it. In the Gospel of John, the setting was the home of Sts. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany, and St. Mary of Bethany was the anointer. We read of her, with her hair down (in the style of a harlot, not a respectable woman who could afford expensive nard ointment from India), behaving in an undignified and loving way. We read that this anointing foreshadowed the anointing of Jesus’s corpse a few days later.
Displays of selfless love may shock one. Ponder what Jesus did later that week, O reader. Ponder what St. Mary of Bethany did at the beginning of the week, too. Consider that these acts were different from each other yet had much in common. The application of any given timeless principle varies according to who, when, and where one is.
What does the playing out of selfless love entail and look like where and when you are, O reader?

Reading the Bible for spiritual formation is an ancient Benedictine practice. My primary purpose in writing this short piece is to ask, how do the accounts (mainly the Lukan and Matthean ones) of the temptations of Jesus challenge us, both as individuals and a parish, to follow Jesus better than we do.
The Temptation to Turn Stones into Bread
Bread was especially precious in ancient Palestine, with relatively little arable land.
We are blessed to be able to purchase our bread inexpensively at stores. Bread is abundant in our context, so we probably take it for granted more often than not. We can, however, think of some tangible needs related to scarcity.
One challenge is not to permit tangible needs to overtake intangible necessities. We all depend entirely on God and dwell within a web of mutual responsibility and dependence. According to the late Henri Nouwen, this temptation is the temptation to be relevant. Relevance is not necessarily bad; in fact, it is frequently positive. However, maintaining the proper balance of tangible and intangible needs is essential. Furthermore, Christ’s refusal to cave into the temptation to use his power to make bread—to cease to depend on God—ought to remind us never to imagine that we do not depend entirely on God.

- Do we permit tangible needs to distract us from intangible necessities? If so, how?
- Do we manifest the vain idea that we do not depend entirely on God? If so, how?
The Temptation to Jump from the Pinnacle of the Temple
Many scholars of the New Testament have proposed what the pinnacle of the Temple was.
That matter aside, this temptation is, according to Nouwen, the temptation to be spectacular. It is also the temptation to attempt to manipulate God by trying to force God to intervene in a miraculous way. That effort, like turning stones into bread, would indicate a lack of faith.
We humans frequently like the spectacular, do we not? We tell ourselves and others that, if only God would do something spectacular, we will believe. We are like those who, in the Gospels, only wanted Jesus to do something for them, and not to learn from him.
Questions
- Does our attraction to the spectacular distract us from the still, small voice of God? If so, how?
- Does our attraction to the spectacular reveal our lack of faith? If so, how?
- Does our attraction to the spectacular unmask our selfishness? If so, how?
The Temptation to Worship Satan in Exchange for Earthly Authority
Many Palestinian Jews at the time of Christ thought of Satan as the power behind the Roman Empire and of the Roman pantheon as a collection of demons. Jesus affirmed God the Father as the only source of his identity.
This temptation is about idolatry, power, and morally untenable compromises.
Many well-intentioned people—ministers, politicians, and appointed office holders, for example—have, in the name of doing good, become corrupt and sacrificed their suitability to do good. They have sacrificed their moral integrity on the altar of amoral realism.
Some compromises are necessary, of course. As Reinhold Niebuhr reminded us, we cannot help but commit some evil while trying to do good, for human depravity has corrupted social systems and institutions.
Questions
- Have we established our identity apart from God? If so, how?
- How have we, with good intentions, committed or condoned evil?
- Have we made morally untenable compromises? If so, how?
The Good News
The good news is both collective and individual.
I discover the principle, then: that when I want to do right, only wrong is within my reach. In my inmost self I delight in the law of God, but I perceive in my outward actions a different law, fighting against the law that my mind approves, and making me a prisoner under the law of sin which controls my conduct. Wretched creature that I am, who is there to rescue me from this state of death? Who but God? Thanks be to him through Jesus Christ our Lord! To sum up then: left to myself I serve God’s law with my mind, but with my unspiritual nature I serve the law of sin.

A Faithful Response, Part III

Psalm 36, taken in its entirety, contrasts evil people with God, whose steadfast love is precious. That juxtaposition of human evil and divine steadfast love is evident in John 12:1-11, with the plot to kill the recently raised Lazarus (11:1-16) joining the plot to scapegoat and kill Jesus (11:45-57). That juxtaposition is also present in the background in Hebrews 9:11-15.
The most likely identity of the faithful servant of God in Isaiah 42:1-9, in the original context, is the faithful Jews. One might easily understand the identification of the servant with Jesus. Furthermore, one might expand the identity of that servant to include all the faithful people of God–Jews and Gentiles alike. Collectively we can do more than anyone of us laboring individually. The spirit of God is upon us. We have the responsibility to teach the true way to the nations, to bring forth that true way, to set prisoners free, and to liberate dungeon-dwellers. We ought to live for the glory of God and the benefit of our fellow human beings, not for ourselves.
Jesus has shown us the way.

Loving God, who loves us, mourns with us, and rejoices with us,
the death of dreams and aspirations is among the most traumatic losses to endure.
It cuts to the emotional core of a person, causing great anguish, grief, and anger.
Regardless if the dream was indeed the one a person should have followed
(assuming that it was not morally wrong, of course),
the pain and disappointment are legitimate, I suppose.
I have known these emotions in this context more than once.
I wish them upon nobody, not even those who inflicted them upon me.
May we, by grace, function as your ministers of comfort
to those experiencing such a death or the aftermath of one
and who are near us or whom you send our way.
And may we, by grace, help others achieve their potential
and refrain from inflicting such pain upon others.
In the name of Jesus, who identified with us, suffered, died, and rose again. Amen.

The Synoptic Gospels tell us something powerful and vital visually: Jesus entered Jerusalem that signal day on the back of a beast of burden. This was a clear sign within his culture, for a king who had won already rode such an animal to the peace talks. Thus our Lord and Savior entered Jerusalem triumphantly not as a conquering hero but as one who had triumphed already. As the wordy Jesus of the Fourth Gospel says,
I have overcome the world.

The servant of God in Isaiah 42:1-9, in the original meaning, is the Hebrews, the Chosen People. That mandate is also the assignment of all the faithful people of God—Jews and Gentiles—to shine brightly for God and to work justice-righteousness. (Justice and righteousness are the same in the Bible.) One test of how well we perform on that standard is how we treat others, especially the vulnerable. That is a good idea to remember as we proceed through Holy Week and approach the liturgical observance of our Lord and Savior’s judicial murder—his crucifixion.

Before I arrive at my main point I choose to indulge myself in raising two points.
ALPHA
All the livestock of the Egyptians died in Exodus 9:6. That is what the text says. Where, then, did the Egyptians get the livestock mentioned in 9:19? My inquiring mind wants to know. The source of both verses is presumably the Elohist (E), so I cannot explain away this detail by pointing to the editing together of different documents. And I assume that the Hebrews kept all their livestock, of which we will read later in the Book of Exodus.
I did find one attempt to explain this detail. The NIV Study Bible (1985), page 98, offers this weak explanation:
That is, all that were left out in the fields. Protected livestock remained alive (see vv. 19-21).
But that is not what 9:6 says. It does not say that all the unprotected livestock died. No, even in the New International Version, it reads:
All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but one one animal belonging to the Israelites died.
The sooner we abandon misconceptions of Scriptural infallibility and inerrancy, the better off we will be. We ought not to transform texts into allegedly error-free idols. No, an error crept in somewhere during the transmission of the saga of the plagues. That is the simplest explanation.

Hebrews 2:15 is one source for the Conquest Satan theory of the Atonement. One finds three understandings of the Atonement in the writings of the first five centuries’ worth of the Church Fathers. The other two are Penal Substitution and the Incarnation itself.

Now for my main programming….
Exodus 9:20-21, for the first time in that book, makes a distinction between those Egyptians who obeyed God’s instructions and those who did not. Those who did as Moses said reaped the benefits. And, in Hebrews 2:1-4, we read a stark warning not to neglect salvation
so that we do not drift away.

Yes, I affirm Single Predestination and its partner, free will, and therefore recognize the possibility of committing apostasy. I do not advocate apostasy, however. Free will plays a vital role in gaining and retaining salvation for many people.
The original audience for the Letter to the Hebrews risked suffering for the Gospel. So here in Chapter 2 we find yet another passage which contradicts the idea that suffering necessarily equals punishment for sin. In fact, the text tells us, Christ’s suffering “perfected” him, that is, completed the divine plan of salvation. So Christ, who has suffered, can identify with and help suffering Christians.
This is excellent news. It should encourage us in our struggles. But if we drift away, there remains the possibility of returning. I do not presume to know the extent of divine mercy. It is vast, however. But there is also judgment. All of these matters are for God, not me, to decide and decree. If we are prodigal sons or daughters, may we return to home and stay there. And, if we are elder brothers or sisters, may we not resent divine mercy.

God of justice,
may we have proper priorities.
Taking our cues from the prophets and Jesus,
may we eschew idolatry,
love you fully,
love our neighbors as we love ourselves,
care for widows and orphans,
plead their cases,
feed the hungry,
clothe the naked,
visit the sick and the imprisoned,
resist and condemn judicial corruption and other official injustice,
and value the most vulnerable members of society.
May we love the unloved,
comfort the comfortless,
give hope to the hopeless,
include the improperly excluded,
and recognize your image in each other.
May we succeed by grace and for your glory and our common good.
Amen.

Dear Jesus,
who forgave even those who consented to your crucifixion,
help us to pray for those who have harmed us.
May those who have harmed us, whether
knowingly or unknowingly,
willfully or accidentally,
maliciously or not,
cease to do harm.
And may they know your love, forgiveness, and joy,
so that they may prosper and succeed in the good they do and will commit.
Whether or not we can or do reconcile with them,
may anger, distrust, and misunderstanding
fade away and disappear.
And, together or separately,
may we and those who have harmed us
move into the future productively and positively,
for the common good.
Amen.
