Truth, in the Johannine sense, means “activated integrity.” Truth is also that which is reliable, according to The Anchor Bible Dictionary. This makes sense. How can anything be true if it is unreliable?
May we–you, O reader, and I–consider “activated integrity.” We read of it in the selection for a replacement for Judas Iscariot in Acts 1. We read about the perfect love that casts our fear in 1 John 4. The type of fear that perfect love expels belies activated integrity. We read of an example of the praise of God, who embodies activated integrity, in Psalm 47. And the restoration of wholeness after the breaking of it (Psalm 133; Acts 1) is an expression of activated integrity.
Divine love, we read in 1 John 4, casts out the fear that has to do with punishment. Some fear is healthy and encourages safety. For example, I fear touching hot surfaces. And when I walk at night, I carry a flashlight and watch where I step. I fear stepping into a hole, an anthill, et cetera. Acting based on some fears is a reasonable safety precaution. In contrast, the fear in 1 John 4 holds people and groups back from their spiritual potential. These fears often stand between someone and practicing the Golden Rule. Politicians and media outlets frequently encourage such fear and exaggerate dangers for their own cynical, opportunistic, and nefarious purposes–winning elections based on distortions and damn lies, boosting ratings, perpetuating policies contrary to the Golden Rule, et cetera. Often they do so while citing God and/or family values.
Jesus taught us to love one another, not to live in fear and distrust of each other. He taught us to take up our crosses and to follow him, not to scapegoat and victimize people. So, may divine, perfect love cast out the unreasonable fear in you, O reader. May it also expel such fear from me. May such love fill the void the expelled fear leaves behind. May divine love overflow in you and in me.

The apocalyptic tone of 2 Peter 3:8-14 and Mark 13:1-3 is actually good news. God is the king of creation, of course, despite appearances to the contrary. The word of God continues to spread, despite violent attempts to prevent that. The end of the current world order will precede the rise of the divine world order.
One of the themes in the New Testament is the importance of remaining faithful–of not committing apostasy–despite many short-term reasons to do so. Avoiding prison, continuing to live, and preventing suffering all sound like good reasons not to do something, do they not. They are, much of the time. However, Christian fidelity sometimes leads to incarceration, suffering, and/or martyrdom. Yet, if we suffer with Christ, we will reign with him.

Psalm 148, with its theme of the praise of God, seems initially to contradict the tone of the other two readings. Each of those lessons speaks of a scroll of judgment, or, as TANAKH: The Holy Scriptures (1985) renders part of Ezekiel 2:10,
lamentations, dirges, and woes.
God commissions Ezekiel to speak hard truths. The prophet accepts his commission, but not without some bitterness. The narrator in Revelation 10 describes an encounter with an angel and accepts his commission to
utter prophecies over many nations, races, languages, and kings.

In each case the metaphorical consumption of the scroll occurs, with the narrator describing the judgments of God as tasting as sweet as honey. One might think more readily of Psalm 19:9b, which reads:
the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Yet the framers of the daily lectionary attached to the Revised Common Lectionary for Sundays and major holy days saw fit to give us Psalm 148 instead. In a way this brings me back to Psalm 19–verse 19a, to be precise:
The fear of the LORD is clean and rejoices the heart.
—The Book of Common Prayer (1979)
“Fear of God” is a misleading translation, for “fear” should be “awe.” Our narrators stand in awe of God, so even bitter words of judgment taste sweet, so to speak. Each narrator has a role to play, and he accepts it. Thus he can praise God even while performing a bitter task.
As for me, I have learned via living that I have had ample cause for gratitude beyond words to God during extremely difficult circumstances. I have felt closest to God during trying times, not comfortable ones. Perhaps Ezekiel had a similar (in some ways) experience of God; the book bearing his name has given me that impression.

Loving God, who loves us, mourns with us, and rejoices with us,
the death of dreams and aspirations is among the most traumatic losses to endure.
It cuts to the emotional core of a person, causing great anguish, grief, and anger.
Regardless if the dream was indeed the one a person should have followed
(assuming that it was not morally wrong, of course),
the pain and disappointment are legitimate, I suppose.
I have known these emotions in this context more than once.
I wish them upon nobody, not even those who inflicted them upon me.
May we, by grace, function as your ministers of comfort
to those experiencing such a death or the aftermath of one
and who are near us or whom you send our way.
And may we, by grace, help others achieve their potential
and refrain from inflicting such pain upon others.
In the name of Jesus, who identified with us, suffered, died, and rose again. Amen.

Water can be scary, for it has the potential to destroy much property and end lives. In much of the Bible water signifies chaos. The first creation myth (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), actually not as old as the one which follows it, depicts a watery chaos as the foundation of an ordered, flat earth with a dome over it. The lections from Genesis 6-8, being the union of of various texts (as evident in late Chapter 6 and early Chapter 7 with regard to the number of animals to take aboard the Ark), is a composite myth in which water is a force of divine destruction and recreation. And the water is something to fear in Acts 27. It is no accident that, in Revelation 21, the New Jerusalem has no sea; the city is free of chaos.
Professor Amy-Jill Levine, in her Teaching Company course, The Old Testament (2001), says that she does not like Noah. He, in the story, could have tried to save lives if he had argued with God, as Abraham did, she says. Maybe she has a valid point. It is certainly one nobody broached in my juvenile or adult Sunday School classes, for my first encounter with the idea came via DVD recently. Yet the story which the Biblical editor wanted us to hear was one of God’s covenant with Noah.
That theme of covenant fits well with the calm and confidence of St. Paul the Apostle en route to Rome. He had a legal case arising from preaching (Acts 21:27 forward). The Apostle had exercised his right as a Roman citizen to appeal directly to the Emperor (Acts 25:11). Yet Herod Agrippa II (reigned 50-100), a client ruler of the Roman Empire, had stated that the Apostle could have gone free if he had not appealed to the Emperor (Acts 26:32), who, unfortunately, was Nero. Anyhow, Paul’s calm and confidence during the storm on the Mediterranean Sea, with the danger on board the ship, came from a positive spiritual place.
That peace is the kind which Jesus bequeaths to us and which the world cannot give. That peace is the sort which enables one to remain properly–seemingly foolishly, to some–confident during daunting times. That peace carries one through the chaotic waters and the spiritual wilderness until one arrives at the New Jerusalem. That peace is available via grace.

The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod lectionary of 2006 (from the Lutheran Service Book) skipped over Leviticus 25, which includes the year of the Jubilee. People should have observed it more often than they did. If one had lost an inheritance of land, he was supposed to get it back. Slaves were to become free people. the land was supposed to lie fallow, for its benefit and that of the people. The underlying principle was that everything belonged to God.
The theology of sin and suffering in Leviticus 26 is overly simplistic. Sin leads to suffering; righteousness leads to blessings. The Book of Job argues against this theology as a universal rule. And Jesus, in Luke 13 and 14, was en route to Jerusalem to die–not for his own sins (as he had none) but for and because of the sins of others. Herod Antipas (Luke 13:31-33) wanted Jesus dead. His father, Herod the Great, had also wanted Jesus dead. Seeking the death of another is certainly sinful.
Blessed are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, look!–your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets.

Not all will go well for us when we walk with God. Yet it is good to walk with God, regardless of the price one must pay. What can one offer in exchange for one’s soul?
I close with words by William Alexander Percy (1885-1942):
The peace of God,
it is no peace,
but strife closed in the sod.
Yet let us pray for just one thing–
the marvelous peace of God.

God of justice,
may we have proper priorities.
Taking our cues from the prophets and Jesus,
may we eschew idolatry,

Dear Jesus,
who forgave even those who consented to your crucifixion,
help us to pray for those who have harmed us.
May those who have harmed us, whether
knowingly or unknowingly,
willfully or accidentally,
maliciously or not,
cease to do harm.
And may they know your love, forgiveness, and joy,
so that they may prosper and succeed in the good they do and will commit.
Whether or not we can or do reconcile with them,
may anger, distrust, and misunderstanding
fade away and disappear.
And, together or separately,
may we and those who have harmed us
move into the future productively and positively,
for the common good.
