The readings for this Sunday bear a striking thematic similarity to those for last Sunday. So be it.
1 John 4:10 speaks of Jesus as the expiation for our sins. In this context, “sins” means moral failings. Generally, in Johannine thought, sin is failing to recognize the divine revelation in Jesus, as in John 20:22-23. The First Epistle of John, however, uses both the moral and theological definitions of sin. Expiation is an
atoning action which obliterates sin from God’s sight and so restores us to holiness and the divine favor.

Then that epistle continues:
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

In the lections, we can read of different ways of loving one another. In Acts 11:19-30 alone, we read of evangelism, of the encouraging role of St. (Joseph) Barnabas extending a welcome to a former persecutor (St. Paul the Apostle), and of raising funds for the church in Jerusalem.
How is God calling you, O reader, to love one another like Jesus in your context–when you are, where you are, and according to who you are? Think and pray about this matter, I urge you.

Psalm 23 is a familiar passage. Perhaps familiarity breeds not contempt so much as it encourages turning on the automatic pilot when reading or hearing it.
O yes, I know this passage well,
we who are immersed in scripture might say to ourselves before we stop paying attention. But how well do we really know the text?
Psalm 23 might have originated during the Babylonian Exile or afterward. Imagine, O reader, Judean exiles pondering their foreign environs and hoping for a return to their ancestral homeland, of which they have only heard. Or imagine exiles who have returned coming to terms with the fact that realities of life in that homeland fall short of fond hopes and prophetic promises.
Only goodness and steadfast love shall pursue me
all the days of my life
–Psalm 23:6a, TANAKH: The Holy Scriptures (1985)
takes on a certain meaning then. The enemies do not pursue; not “goodness and steadfast love” do–or will. That is a timeless hope.
The themes of judgment, mercy, exile, and return run through these days’ readings. Exile comes, persists for decades, and ends. Restoration (by God, via human agents thereof) follows. God expects us to live in ways that glorify Him, but we fall sort of that standard often. Furthermore, obeying God in this life does not guarantee a peaceful, safe, and prosperous life. Neither does disobeying God in this life guarantee the opposite result. Yet there is the question of the afterlife. Furthermore, for the divine order to come into its own, God must destroy its sinful, human predecessor.
Frequently good news for the oppressed constitutes catastrophic news for their oppressors who, ironically, hurt themselves by engaging in the work of oppression. Thus oppression creates both victims and oppressors, but only only victims. We humans are often the victims of our own bad decisions, thus we are frequently simultaneously victims and oppressors. This need not be the case, for we can, by grace, walk the path of righteousness more often than not. Enemies might still pursue us, as they did Jesus, but so will divine goodness and steadfast love.

Loving God, who loves us, mourns with us, and rejoices with us,
the death of dreams and aspirations is among the most traumatic losses to endure.
It cuts to the emotional core of a person, causing great anguish, grief, and anger.
Regardless if the dream was indeed the one a person should have followed
(assuming that it was not morally wrong, of course),
the pain and disappointment are legitimate, I suppose.
I have known these emotions in this context more than once.
I wish them upon nobody, not even those who inflicted them upon me.
May we, by grace, function as your ministers of comfort
to those experiencing such a death or the aftermath of one
and who are near us or whom you send our way.
And may we, by grace, help others achieve their potential
and refrain from inflicting such pain upon others.
In the name of Jesus, who identified with us, suffered, died, and rose again. Amen.

Blasphemy is a capital crime in the Law of Moses, which frowns upon perjury. In fact, the penalty for perjury is whatever fate the falsely accused suffered or would have suffered. So, according to the Law of Moses, the authorities stoned the wrong man in Acts 7.
The stoning of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is just one of several accounts of violence, attempted and otherwise, of which we read in these lections. That kind of violence–done in the name of God by heirs of Abraham (physically or spiritually or both), members of a nation God has freed more than once–is always unbecoming. To disagree with a person is one thing, but to seek to kill him or her because of that difference is quite another. It constitutes an attempt to prove one’s righteousness by sinful means. Thus such an act defines as a lie that which the perpetrator seeks to affirm.
I, as a Christian, follow one who died for several reasons, among them the motivation I just mentioned. Thus I am especially aware of the perfidy of such violence, which, unfortunately, continues. Christians in certain Islamic countries are subject to charges of blasphemy then to execution. Honor killings continue to occur around the world. They seem to attract the most attention in the Western press when immigrants commit them in Western countries, but they happen daily, often without the press noticing them. I am also aware of the long, shameful history of “Christian” violence against Jews. Ritual washing of hands, for example, contributed to greater cleanliness among European Jews relative to other populations on the continent and therefore helped to reduce their vulnerability to the Black Death in the 1300s. Many fearful, Anti-Semitic Gentiles blamed Jews for the plague and attacked them. God, please save us from your alleged followers!
May mutual love and respect prevail. And, when we disagree with someone whose presence threatens our notions of our own righteousness, may we refrain from violence. Even if the other person is wrong, partially or entirely, that does not justify killing or attempting to kill an innocent person.

God of justice,
may we have proper priorities.
Taking our cues from the prophets and Jesus,
may we eschew idolatry,
love you fully,
love our neighbors as we love ourselves,
care for widows and orphans,
plead their cases,
feed the hungry,
clothe the naked,
visit the sick and the imprisoned,
resist and condemn judicial corruption and other official injustice,
and value the most vulnerable members of society.
May we love the unloved,
comfort the comfortless,
give hope to the hopeless,
include the improperly excluded,
and recognize your image in each other.
May we succeed by grace and for your glory and our common good.

Dear Jesus,
who forgave even those who consented to your crucifixion,
help us to pray for those who have harmed us.
May those who have harmed us, whether
knowingly or unknowingly,
willfully or accidentally,
maliciously or not,
cease to do harm.
And may they know your love, forgiveness, and joy,
so that they may prosper and succeed in the good they do and will commit.
Whether or not we can or do reconcile with them,
may anger, distrust, and misunderstanding
fade away and disappear.
And, together or separately,
may we and those who have harmed us
move into the future productively and positively,
for the common good.

Eternal Life

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 (New Revised Standard Version):
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said,
Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus– for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us– one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.
So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said,
Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.
And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.
Psalm 1 (1979 Book of Common Prayer):
1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked,
nor lingered in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the seats of the scornful!
2 Their delight is in the law of the LORD,
and the meditate on his law day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither,
everything they do shall prosper.
4 It is not so with the wicked;
they are like the chaff which the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

1 John 5:9-13 (New Revised Standard Version):
If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
John 17:6-19 (New Revised Standard Version):
Looking up to heaven, Jesus prayed,
I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
The Collect:
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The Jesus of the Gospel of Mark speaks from time to time (mostly briefly) yet acts more often than he says much. In contrast, the Jesus of the Johannine Gospel holds forth, often in private, at length. This latter understanding of our Lord becomes apparent in this Sunday’s Gospel reading, part of Christ’s great intercessory prayer.
More interesting to me, however, is the concept of eternal life, which, according to John 17:3, is knowing God (the Father) and Jesus Christ (God the Son). And we read in 1 John 5:11 that “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” So eternal life is life in Christ; its definition does not depend on time or the afterlife.
Simply put, there is no eternity without God. There can be an afterlife without God; the term for that is Hell. God, of course, is the final judge, and I do not presume to make judgments as to a person’s fate in the afterlife. Who knows what happens between anyone and Jesus after one dies?
As a Christian–an intellectually honest one–I affirm the necessity of Christ. I also testify to grace, the bounds of which exceed my imagination. In other words, God does not fit into any proverbial box, and I try not to put God into one. I do know a few things for sure, though: God does exist, God does care about us actively, and I am not God. Also, the historical person named Jesus of Nazareth was God incarnate. Three of these four statements are great mysteries; may we accept and embrace them. As to the non-mysterious statement (“I am not God.”), that is obvious.
