Biblical authors did not always define certain words the same way. For example, “sin” meant a moral failing in Matthew 18:18 yet a theological failing in John 20:22-23. In the Johannine theological context, sin was the failure to recognize the revelation of God in Jesus. Hence, a Christian did not sin, in Johannine theological terms (1 John 3:6). Also, forgiving sins was a task for the faith community empowered by the Holy Spirit. This faith community, empowered by the Holy Spirit, continued the work of Jesus.
The First Epistle of John tells us that the love of God entails keeping divine commandments, which are not burdensome. The Gospel of John has Jesus say that those who love him will keep his commandments (14:23). The most basic commandment of Jesus is the Golden Rule. That should not be burdensome, should it?
God forgives sins, whichever definition one uses. So should the communities of the people of God. Repentance must precede forgiveness, especially if one defines sins as moral failings. Forgiveness without prior repentance is cheap grace–something meaningless and not transformative.
Just as repentance must precede forgiveness for forgiveness to mean anything, truth must precede reconciliation, something else Jesus brings and God grants. In the Johannine lexicon, truth means “activated integrity.” It is not a philosophical abstraction; no truth is something lived. The hard work of being honest must precede the graces of reconciliation and forgiveness. This is a lesson which many people–including certain politicians and many of their supporters–prefer to ignore. They seek to brush difficulties of the collective and/or individual past under the proverbial rug. They seek the cheap graces of painless forgiveness and faux reconciliation without prior repentance and the acknowledgment of reality. And they often do so in the name of Jesus, unfortunately. They, therefore, mock God, truth, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

In context, Isaiah 50:4-9a is an odd lection to read on this Sunday. The speaker–the prophet/servant (Second Isaiah)–is pious yet merely human, therefore, sinful. He believes that the suffering of the exiles during the Babylonian Exile has been justified. Yet he also anticipates the divine vindication of that exiled population, for the glory of God. Applying this reading to sinless Jesus (who suffered an unjust execution as an innocent man) requires astounding theological gymnastics.
The hymn St. Paul the Apostle quoted back to the Philippian Christians in the 50s C.E. indicates something about the development of Christology by that time. One may wonder how old the human was when St. Paul quoted it. One may keep wondering, for one has no way of knowing. Yet one may know that the time from which it originated was at or near the dawn of Christianity.
Palm Sunday functions as the Reader’s Digest version of Holy Week through Good Friday in many churches. It does on the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship lectionary. So be it. With that in mind, I invite you, O reader, to ponder the injustice of what Jesus suffered during Holy Week. I also encourage you to place yourself inside the narrative and to ask yourself who you would have been in the story. Depending on your honest answer, you may have uncovered a sin (or sins) of which to repent.

I have been composing lectionary-based devotions for more than a decade. I have, therefore, covered the temptation of Jesus already.
I make one comment about it, though: one function of the story is to help Christians know how to resist temptation.
This combination of readings–about temptation, confession of sin, and repentance–works well as a unit. The First Reading provides my main point: we must resist the temptation to misquote God, as Eve did in the myth. Read that text again, O reader, and realize that God did not forbid touching the fruit of the knowledge of good and bad. Misquoting God gave the mythical snake his opening.

He who adds [to God’s words] subtracts [from them].

The words of God are what God has said and says. Scripture, channeled through human lenses and experiences, provide many of God’s words. The Reformed tradition within Christianity speaks of God’s second book, nature. The mystical tradition within Christianity recognizes another method by which God speaks. I report some experiences I cannot explain rationally. I do know if I I listened to God, a guardian angel, or intuition. Yet I know that I listened and acted, to my benefit in practical, automotive matters.
I am an intellectual. I reject the inerrancy and infallibility of scripture, based on having studied the Bible closely and seriously. And I take the Bible seriously. I try to understand first what a given text says, in original context. Then I extrapolate to today. I try not to misquote or misinterpret any text of scripture. Neither do I shut down the parts of my mind that respect history and science. Good theology, good history, and good science are in harmony. As Galileo Galilei said:
The Bible tells us now to go to Heaven, not how the heavens go.
O reader, what is God saying to you today? Do mis misquote it. No, listen carefully.

The prophet Joel, in the 400s B.C.E. interpreted a plague of locusts as divine punishment on the people for disobeying the Law of Moses repeatedly and habitually. He also understood that repentance remained an option.
I do not share Joel’s first assumption. I do not interpret natural disasters as acts of divine judgment. Those who live in Kansas may expect tornadoes. Those who reside near the Gulf of Mexico may expect hurricanes and tropical storms. Those who live near fault lines may expect earthquakes. Those who live near active volcanoes may expect volcanic activity. Those who live in a flood plain may expect floods. Such is nature.
The Hebrew prophetic tradition could not make up its mind when repentance remained an option and when God had stopped listening. (I know; I read the Hebrew prophetic books carefully recently.) However, I have made up my mind on part of the issue: So long as one has breath, repentance remains an option. Whether one can repent after death is a question I cannot answer. The answer to that question is for God to provide. I do not presume to know the balance of divine judgment and mercy.
Remorse for sins prepares the way for repentance of those sins. Talk is cheap. Nevertheless, some words are necessary and helpful. Martin Luther was correct; language–especially sacramental language–has power. And actions are where, as a cliché says, the rubber meets the road.
Lent is a season in which the Church (that part of it with good liturgical sense, at least) focuses on repentance. We mere mortals need to repent individually. Societies, cultures, kingdoms, empires, nation-states, and institutions need to repent collectively. Even the best of us, who have mastered the Lutheran theological category of civil righteousness, have fallen far short of God’s standard. The rest of us have fallen far short of the same standard, too. Everyone above a very young age struggles with habitual sins we know better than to commit.
Fortunately, God welcomes penitents and knows that we mere mortals are, poetically, like dust. May we be penitent dust daily. And may we observe Lent in such a way that we grow spiritually during this season.

I would feel better about Colossians 3:12-4:6 if it did not accept slavery.
Repent and return to God, Hosea 14, urges. Accept divine forgiveness and act accordingly. Forgive each other. After all, everybody needs forgiveness. And, although grace is free, it is not cheap. Become a vehicle of grace. Remain a vehicle of grace. And do not be an in instrument of injustice, as Pontius Pilate was. That is my composite summary of the four readings.
And, of course, never accept cultural practices that run afoul of the Golden Rule.

God is a like a loving father in Hosea 11:1-11. The people of Israel and Judah are like a perpetually rebellious son in that passage. Not only does God call for the people (plural) to repent in Hosea 1:1-11, but God also repents of destructive plans. Mercy follows judgment.
In context, those collective, persistent sins involved committing idolatry and treating human beings badly. Authors in both the Old and New Testaments banged the drum of the message that God cares deeply about the treatment of human beings, especially vulnerable ones, by individuals, communities, systems, institutions, and governments.
Recently, in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, where I live, I read about a local miscarriage of justice. Without ever receiving either proper mental health care or a trial, an elderly, mentally ill woman spent nearly a year in the Clarke County jail. The District Attorney’s Office had refused to drop the charges at the time the article went to print. There should never have been any legal charges, just proper mental health care.
When governments act unjustifiably, they do so in the name of the people. I say,
Don’t you dare do that in my name!
I say,
Repent of injustice.
I say,
God is watching us.

Looking for Jesus is a theme in the readings from the New Testament. The germane question is why one seeks him–to control or arrest him, with ultimate lethal intent or to follow him. One can never control Jesus, of course. But one can follow him. Doing so entails repentance–actions, not just words or intentions. Fortunately, God seems to like repentance.
Aspects of the readings from Hosea 6 and Colossians 2 require unpacking. Hosea 6:4-11 condemns mistaking sacred rituals for talismans. The Law of Moses, of which the Book of Hosea is fond, mandates certain rituals, but does not mistake them for talismans. Obey the Law of Moses, with its moral obligations and keep the rituals, Hosea 6 teaches. Likewise, there are Hellenistic cultural contextual issues at work in Colossians 2. May you, O reader, and I never repeat the error of the General Assembly of the old Presbyterian Church in the United States (the “Southern Presbyterian Church”), which approved the following resolution:
There is no warrant for the observance of Christmas and Easter as holy days, but rather the contrary (see Galatians iv. 9-11; Colossians ii. 16-21), and such observance is contrary to the principles of the Reformed faith, conducive to will-worship, and not in harmony with the simplicity of the gospel in Jesus Christ.
The theme of the reading from Colossians 2 is the proper use of Christian liberty. We are free in Christ to follow him. The worldly distractions you, O reader, and I may contend with may be quite different from those for the original audience of the Letter to the Colossians. May we not mistake culturally specific examples of timeless principles for those principles.
Loving one’s neighbor as one loves oneself can get one in deep trouble. Obeying the moral obligations of divine commandments can be perilous. Of course, the servant is not greater than the master.

Dating the Book of Joel is difficult, but its message is simple: After the judgment of God and the repentance of Israel divine mercy will be abundant and God will pour out His spirit on all people. The assigned reading, quoted partially in Acts 2:1-21, fits well with Psalm 104. The future age predicted in Joel 2:21-32/2:21-3:5 remains for our future, but its message of God’s universal outpouring of the Holy Spirit is timeless. For the sake of completeness, however, one should not that Chapter 4 (if one is Jewish, Roman Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox)/Chapter 3 (if one is Anglican or Protestant) contains both judgment and mercy.
By means of both the witness of the Holy Spirit and Single Predestination, taken together, salvation is available to all people, but many people reject it, hence divine judgment. This is unfortunate, as well as beyond any mere mortal’s pay grade, so to speak. Nevertheless, the extent of the boundaries of divine grace would probably shock most of us, if we knew all the details. These are properly matters in the purview of God.
John 7:37-38, in the original Greek, is a somewhat ambiguous text, due to the question of punctuation. Related to that issue is the matter of theological interpretation, as commentaries reveal. I feel comfortable asserting that Jesus, not the believer, is the source of the rivers of living water. In Christianity we must look to Jesus. God is central; we are not.

That sentence puts Jonah in his place.
My studies of the Book of Job have provided a lesson applicable to the Book of Jonah. Job and his alleged friends committed the same error: they presumed to know how God does and should act. That, at least, was a lesson of one layer of the authorship of the Book of Job; the prose epilogue threw a wrench into the supposed sin of Job–supposing to know how God does and should act, for God agreed with Job in that epilogue.
When Yahweh had said all this to Job, he turned to Eliphaz of Teman. “I burn with anger against you and your two friends,” he said, “for not speaking truthfully about me as my servant Job has done. So now find seven bullocks and seven rams, and take them back to my servant Job and offer a holocaust for yourselves, while Job, my servant, offers prayers for you. I will listen to him with favor and excuse your folly in not speaking of me properly as my servant Job has done.” Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah and Zophar of Naamath went away to do as Yahweh had ordered, and Yahweh listened to Job with favor.

Jonah, anyway, supposed to know how God does and should act. When God extended mercy to Jonah’s national enemy, the reluctant prophet–“that clown,” as a Roman Catholic priest once described him in writing–became disappointed with God. Yet Jonah depended on divine mercy as much as the people of Nineveh did.
If you, O LORD, should make iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
–Psalm 130:3-4, The New Revised Standard Version (1989)
The Book of Jonah ends on an ambiguous note. God and the prophet have an unresolved theological confrontation. The text, concluding thusly, invites us to consider who we are more like in the story.
Each of us has an inner Jonah. We object to the scandal of grace on occasion. We tell ourselves that we want justice when we actually seek retribution. We want God to draw the circle tightly around us and people similar to ourselves, not to draw it wide and call even our foes to repentance. Yet there are also those who want God to exclude us.
I do not pretend to know the mind of God; that is a glorious mystery too great for me. I do, however, study scripture, read theology, and recognize patterns. One of these patters is that we are not God. Another pattern is that no theological box defines God. Judgment and mercy exist side-by-side throughout the Bible. Where one ends and the other begins resides in the purview of God, as it should.

The reading from Matthew 26 depicts a scene of perfidy. Religious leaders, in violation of the Law of Moses, seek false testimony (a capital offense, at least theoretically) to send Jesus to his execution, we read. Their charge against him is blasphemy, a capital offense, according to Leviticus 24:16.
These men were really defending their power base as they committed a great sin. Yet God used their actions to work abundant grace, culminated, in a few days, in the resurrection. Those religious leaders must have had some interesting private discussions about that.
Divine grace is so abundant that it falls upon individuals as well as groups, and believers as well as heathens. Grace calls us to repentance. We all need to repent–to turn our backs to sin–daily.
Each of us has an inner Jonah. We rejoice when God extends mercy to us and people similar to ourselves, but we, like some of the psalmists, want God to smite our enemies. God loves them too, however. God rejoices when they repent; so should we.
